Career
Professor Dr. Marion A. Weissenberger-Eibl holds the Chair for Innovation and Technology Management at the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Technology Management and Innovation (ENTECHNON) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Furthermore, she is head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI.
Professor Weissenberger-Eibl works on the conditions conducive to innovations and their impacts. Her research focus is on the management of innovation and technology, roadmapping, strategic foresight and planning, enterprise networks and knowledge management. Marion A. Weissenberger-Eibl, who was recently named one of the “most influential women engineers in Germany“ and “Top 100 most influential women of the German economy“, studied clothing technology and business administration. She obtained her doctorate and wrote her habilitation thesis at the Technical University of Munich. In recognition of her scientific achievements, the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) appointed the innovation researcher Weissenberger-Eibl as a member in 2012. Since 2018, she supports the research committee at the German Council of Science and Humanities. In particular, Professor Weissenberger-Eibl contributes her expertise to producing the position paper on the topic of “application-oriented research”.
Professor Weissenberger-Eibl is a valued expert in the political arena: She was appointed to the experts' committee for the Chancellor's Dialogue on Germany's Future where she led the working group on “Innovation Culture“ and advised the Chancellor on the future of Germany's society and economy. In the subsequent International German Forum (IGF), an interdisciplinary exchange of views on globally relevant issues, she moderated the discussion of the topic “The future needs holistic solutions“.
In the context of Germany's sustainability strategy, Professor Weissenberger-Eibl is engaged in the government’s “Science Platform Sustainability 2030“. The platform provides scientific support to implementing the German government’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as well as the United Nation’s Agenda 2030 and develops recommendations for action. Furthermore, she is part of the board of advisors of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) and supports the Karl Heinz Beckurts foundation in its board of trustees from 2014 to 2019. The German Foreign Office appointed her to the German-Chinese Dialog Forum for a period of four years. Moreover, she chairs the working group “Research and Innovation Environment“ of the state government of Baden-Württemberg's “Strategy Dialog on the Automotive Industry“.
Professor Weissenberger-Eibl also takes an active role in generating new ideas for the future of academic education and research: She is part of the structural commission establishing a new university in Nürnberg and of the University of Heidelberg's University Council since 2016.
Strengthening the link between industry, science and research, is another of Professor Weissenberger-Eibl's long term goals:
Since 2012, she is a member of the supervisory board of HeidelbergCement AG. With her experience and expertise, she represents a valuable addition to the company in the areas of innovation research, foresight, strategy development and knowledge management. In addition, Professor Weissenberger-Eibl also acts in the supervisory boards of MTU Aero Engines AG (since 2013) and Rheinmetall AG (since 2016).
Professor Weissenberger-Eibl is the author of numerous publications and editor of the series “Cooperation of Science and Industry“. She consults industry, science and politics and in this way makes a decisive contribution to the innovation process in Germany.
